Debut: Comic #48
Dark Samus is the dark version of Samus Aran, the heroine of Metroid: Third Derivative, and is known as the Dark Hunter to the Space Pirates. Dark Samus is not one to be messed with, especially when she's seeking Phazon for consumption and/or revenge against Samus.
Dark Samus was "born" on Planet Tallon IV after Samus defeated Metroid Prime. Metroid Prime was on the verge of dying when it suddenly stabbed Samus with a tentacle and started draining the Phazon out of Samus's Power Suit (Samus lost the Phazon Suit because of this).
After Samus left Tallon IV by escaping from the collapsing Impact Crater due to Metroid Prime's explosion, a black arm with red stripes rose out of a pool of Phazon deep in the ruins of the Impact Crater. This turned out to be the first incarnation of Dark Samus.
Dark Samus appeared again during Samus's mission on Aether with a form closely resembling Samus's Varia Suit (hence the name Dark Samus). Despite her apparent goal of feeding off the Phazon on the planet, she displayed great hostility toward Samus, and would go on to be one of the major antagonists of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.
Samus defeated her several times during her mission, but Dark Samus returned from her apparent death each time. Even as Dark Aether faded into nonexistence, Dark Samus's body reformed itself from the Phazon.
Dark Samus has many of the abilities Samus has, but they are also more powerful (with the exception of one ability). Dark Samus's abilities include missile weaponry, a scatter version of Samus's Power Beam, hovering for indefinate periods, a Phazon Shield to defend against attacks, Shinespark without Speed Boosting, the Boost Ball, the Dark Beam, the Charge Beam, the Darkburst (weaker than Samus's Darkburst as it can't freeze targets), and invisibility.
- Dark Samus's first appearance in Metroid: Third Derivative was originally a small Flash comic that used visuals and sound effects that were highly remniscent of SA-X's first appearance in Metroid Fusion. This comic can no longer be seen in the archive.
